WALC2004 is the 24th edition of the biennial conference of West African Linguistic Society (WALS)

Abstract submission closed officially midnight on 30th April 2004.  Thus abstracts received from now on may not be acknowledged except accepted.  List of subsequently accepted abstracts will be pasted on this site.

Submission of abstracts is now closed. Check out the list of approved abstracts here to find if your abstract is accepted. If so, you should have been notified. But if your abstract is listed and you have not been notified of its acceptance, contact the LOC immediately.

The Conference

WALC2004, hosted by the Department of Linguistics, University of Ibadan, will hold between August 1st and 6th 2004.  Look up the Annoucement page for more information.


Co-hosts

ALT-I (African Languages Technology Initiative), Lagos and Ibadan. The plenary session for this will be taken by Mr Tunde Adegbola, the Executive Director of ALT-I,  who would also organise a workshop which has as one of its objectives, "to examine the possible effects of the emerging information society and globalisation on African languages."

NINLAN (National Institute for Nigerian Languages) 

NINLAN is a tertiary research, documentation and teaching centre for the production of teachers and resource materials in all Nigerian Languages, large, medium or small. It operates under the ambit of the National Universities Commission. Furthermore, the Institute has qualified and experienced translators, lecturers in French, English, Igbo, Hausa and Yoruba Languages.

Local Organizing Committee (LOC)

The LOC of WALC2004, is the chief planning committee of the conference, saddled with all responsibility concerning organisation, planning and logistics of the programme. The LOC for this year's edition of WALC2004 is chaired by Professor Ben Elugbe who is the new Director of the National Institute of Nigerian Languages (NINLAN).
